I still have a dBase program from the 1990's that I run under a windows 2000 OS in VirtualBox and I also have a windows XP environment just in case I ever need to run older versions of VW. It is also possible to run previous OS with a virtual environment such as VirtualBox. The same goes to changes in the OS where some programs may still run while others need to be updated. However, the majority had to be updated over time because the function calls used were either deleted or changed. I have created many vectorscript programs in a span of 20 years and a few still work because the functions calls used have not changed. Now, it is possible to introduce IF.THEN statements to be compatible with older OS such as if version X do this but if version X+1 do that but how many versions back is the developer responsible to maintain? After a few of these IF.THEN statements, the code becomes a nightmare. If the OS changes the calls to certain functions, the developer needs to change its code accordingly so the program can run without crashing. Every program depends on the OS to build the correct code that will run in a particular version. I totally disagree with your statement and I believe this is caused by a misunderstanding of the application development. I don't fault you in any way for questioning the integrity of this company, I personally feel that integrity and business practices should be challenged and repeatedly proven on a regular basis, but you have stated specific concerns based on an exterior point of view and I have replied openly and honestly with the genuine reasons and motivations behind our actions. It isn't that I don't take your concerns seriously or that I think things like this don't happen on a daily basis throughout the world in many businesses, it's just that I have seen no evidence of those practices in all the time I've spent working at Vectorworks Inc. A lot of marketing and spin comes out of every company, and I try to add a different sort of voice. However, the main purpose of this forum is the honest and open interaction between users and members of Vectorworks Inc. Criticism is welcome, complaints are welcome, frustration is welcome, but accusations of corruption and collusion especially when these theories are baseless, are not beneficial to anyone.Īlso, on a more personal note: If I ever came across evidence that this company knowingly engaged in the practices you claim it does, I would find work elsewhere. In the end you can chose to believe me when I state the real reasons for the decisions we make or not, but please know that I take special care to speak honestly and frankly out of respect for you and the other members of this board. I of course can't get very specific on our earnings, but I've seen the numbers personally and we still have yet to break $100 million in a year in earnings. They seem to blame Apple for the need to upgrade, but with 400.000 VectorWorks users this gives the Nemetscheck bank account a rise of something like 4 billion (!!!) dollars.Įven if all users upgraded every year (which they do not,) that would be somewhere around €400 million, and that's more than our actual gross income for multiple combined years. However the point is that Nemetscheck forces users to upgrade VectorWorks, which costs each user more than € 1.000,. A slice does go to Nemetschek AG but nowhere near the amount you claim: Nearly all of our net income is reinvested directly back into R&D, it's one of the major reasons I place as much faith in the company as I do. The resources for keeping compatible with an older OS have to come from somewhere, it isn't as if we have a Scrooge McDuck-ian vault filled with gold coins that we like to keep filling as high as possible. There is nothing we could do differently to try and extend support for a situation like this, other than increase the cost of the product significantly in order to reduce upgrade costs on a tiny fraction of the user base. Was this because you decided to upgrade the other applications? Or because there was a new feature in the applications or the OS that you felt merited the upgrade? In either of these cases, once you make the decision to upgrade your OS, all other compatibilities come into question, including Vectorworks. You chose to upgrade your OS because you had several other applications that you work with that apparently needed the later OS. I, like your 65% Apple users, am forced to update my Apple OS now and then, because I work with several other applications.
